Titanium Material Grades Explained

Titanium grades are grouped by their chemistry and properties. Knowing the families makes selection straightforward.

Commercially Pure (CP): Grades 1-4

Unalloyed titanium, increasing in strength (and decreasing in formability) from Grade 1 to Grade 4. Excellent corrosion resistance and weldability.

Alpha-Beta Alloys: Grade 5 & 23

• Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) — the high-strength workhorse
• Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) — higher purity, tougher; medical implants

Corrosion-Enhanced Grades

• Grade 7 / 11 — palladium-bearing for reducing acids
• Grade 12 — Ni-Mo for crevice corrosion
• Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V) — medium strength, good formability
• Grade 16 / 17 — low-Pd, cost-effective corrosion
